Peacock Feather

In Indian artworks, one would see a lot of different elements that go into intricate designs. The peacock feather is drawn in artworks along the lines of miniature paintings of Rajasthan, where a great attention is given to details rather than perspective and scale.

The peacock feather has been pictured to be adorned by Krishna, the avatar of God Vishnu. Krishna is pictured with the feather on his head in the Indian artworks, and it is as much a symbolism as much as the flute that accompanies him. There are some artworks where only the peacock feather is depicted along with the flute, with out actual picture of the dark skinned God to signify Krishna.

The peacock feather signifies the exuberance of nature.  It is not a common sight of finding peacock these days - at least at the place I stay.  But if you go to my native, a village in the laps of the Western Ghats of India, you fill find the distinctive calls of this wild bird reach your ear.  You should not be surprised when you see a peacock when you take a hike through the hills.  This tenderness of nature seems to have been captured the muse of artists, who depict people in love using the peacock feather as a writing tool to for letters to their loved ones.  You would see in such artworks, a young lady with glazy eyes, in company of her friends, writing a letter to her beloved using a peacock feather.

In the next post at KalaaLog, there will be a tutorial on creating a vector artwork of a peacock feather.  It would be at an intermediate level, and would not go into as much details as the tutorial to create a crystal orb.
