As far as using GIMP or Inkscape or other open source or free alternatives - it is perfectly justifiable to do so when you are doing art as a hobby. It certainly does not make sense to spend a fortune on something that you do not spend much time on, and are doing as a hobby/recreational activity. I have ideas in my head but have a hard time getting the programs to do what I want. I am not a graphics designer or artist by any means. I just like to do things myself. I like your blog and find it informative.
