This time, you will see a walkthrough of designing and painting a stylized and cute furry devil character. I was inspired by the Looney Toons fame Tasmanian Devil and a lot of works of Bobby Chiu.
Concept

Start of by sketching out the rough concept – try to capture the shape and pose of the character. Remember to do this in a separate layer.
Line Art
Start with a new layer on top of it, and reduce the opacity of the construction/concept layer to 50%.

Draw clean lines and form the line art in the separate layer.
Value
You can then either delete the concept layer or hide it.

Fill out the full character with a mid-gray color in a separate layer; name the layer as Value.
We are not worrying about the color yet. Just pick different intensity of gray and color out the bulges and depths of the character.

Use the line art layer to select the area outside the character and you can erase the unwanted area.
Color

Use another layer over the line art and value layers, set it to multiply and apply color over them. You just need to apply the flat color and since it is in ‘multiply’ mode, the value range applies to it. (See article: Separate Light And Color – Digital Painting Technique).
After that, you need to merge all the layers, the line art, value and flat color layers to make one. I would advice you to reduce the opacity of the line art a bit, else you will need to soften the outline.

Detailing
Try to create the furry shapes of the character by using minimal color variations.

One of the techniques I use is the use of varying tones of the same color contrasting against each other a bit. Start of by creating contour bands on the character with a large brush.

After that, detail the fur with a smaller brush and shaping it with the color of the adjacent bands.

You may see a larger version of this work at the deviantART entry.
