This is continuation of the walk-through of illustrating a vector art of Chinese Dragon. Check out Part 1 if you have not done so already.
Shaping Scales

Using the imported image as a guide, start creating shapes for the scales.

An easy trick that you can use while drawing lot of complex details, is to have the imported line art at the top, but with reduced opacity. Make it about 30% to 50% transparent.

Giving a gradient for the scales, can be a bit time consuming, but gives a pleasant effect.

Horns And Fins

After putting in some overall gradients, to make the body rounder, the fins, horns and eyes are detailed.

Chinese Dragon
I show it off to some other artists, who give helpful critiques – I fix most of them.
All the dragon shapes are grouped, and after creating a quick and clean background, the dragon is placed over it and positioned.
