- Software: GIMP
- Level: Advanced
- Subject: Wet Leaf
This started of as a workshop at CGPainting.com and I did not plan to post it here. Hence, this post would not contain as many screen shots as the other tutorials.
… it would involve careful study of the color of the leaf, the color of the wax or the water, the way the light would reflect from them, and learning how best to approach it as a digital painting.
I wanted to focus and study light with this piece, and hence I did not use too much of the digital techniques. I used GIMP, but if you are trying to do a similar work, you should be able to replicate it with any other raster graphics software like Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter.
Concept
Searching Flickr gave me enough leaves as reference. This natural object seems to naturally fancy people who use photography as a medium too.

After few thumbnail sketches, I settled for an orientation, and created a clean sketch.
Background
To establish the mood first, I painted the background first.

Final Painting
After that, I worked on the leaf on a new layer. For the reflection from the water on the leaf, I used a the simple white color with a semi-transparent layer over it.

I am pretty satisfied with the result, and this particular workshop left me with some good coloring techniques, which I can use in future works.
Check out the workshop thread which has all the research and discussions done by the community members.
