End of last year, I challenged myself with the ‘Monster A Day‘ challenge. I wanted to try something similar this time, but wanted to focus a bit more on the quality. Hence, this project, Demon Trio, consists of creating three concept demons. As I plan to learn along the way, these tutorials would not be complete - but updates as and when I make progress.

After a lot of doodling around with silhouettes, I choose these three. Doing the outlines alone helps me keep the concepts loose and worry about the details only when I start actual work on one of them.
Slug
The first of the Demon Trio, named Slug, is a demon that usually has a crouching stance. It is heavily built and is dim in wit.

General color theme is applied to the silhouette. This is done to generally set the color harmony.

I add the flail to balance the character. The earlier pose looked a bit out of balance. In terms of composition too, it gives it a triangular over all shape.

I start rendering his hide and muscles. Even though I assume the color to be falling from left top, this is a general render to give volume to different parts. I would be handling the effect of light at a later stage.

Now that the skin/hide is completed, I need to start working on the metal armor and the flail.
Update to come soon. ![]()
