- Software: GIMP or Adobe Photoshop
- Level: Advanced
- Subject: Demon Trio – Slice
This week has been busy and I have not been able to give much time to any of my art projects. But this Demon Trio project is turning out to be quite exciting and I try to steal in some time for this. I have been learning new techniques and also getting more familiar with the software.
The rough line art I had done earlier in GIMP was saved as a common format – PNG and imported into Photoshop. It is not a necessary step – I wanted to get acquainted with it a bit more. Choose a software (or more than one), which ever is suitable and appropriate for you.
I go over each of the main shapes and make an effort to put down the flats. This becomes useful at a later stage as I start painting, add more details, and want to adjust the color/hue and brightness/value.
You can see the different layers I am using. The Flats copy is used along with the magic want to select the area I am working on. The Flats layer itself would be kept visible, and the colors are chosen on those. The Sketch layer is the imported layer in the ‘multiply’ mode with reduced opacity. On ‘Layer 1′ which would be one of the many painting layers, I would use a soft and partially opaque brush to flesh out the details.
Painting Skin Tone
I purposefully chose the deep blue flat color for his skin, as the orange/brown skin tone, would be nicely balanced out. Recently, I am finding this approach of going dark to light or back to front a more appropriate approach.
Once I got the hang of it, I could do quite a bit and finish of that part of the character.
Watch out for the update this weekend, as I expect to explore more on this – subscribe to KalaaLog.com feeds.
