Shaping Scales

Chinese Dragon - Illustrating - Scale shapes

Using the imported image as a guide, start creating shapes for the scales.

Chinese Dragon - Illustrating - Tip - Translucent Imported Lineart

An easy trick that you can use while drawing lot of complex details, is to have the imported line art at the top, but with reduced opacity. Make it about 30% to 50% transparent.

Chinese Dragon - Illustrating - Scale color

Giving a gradient for the scales, can be a bit time consuming, but gives a pleasant effect.

This is less of a tutorial and more of a walk-through of creating a vector illustration of a Chinese dragon. I will be applying several techniques, which are posted earlier.

Concept and Lineart

As with most of the artworks, I start roughing out different ideas, and then settle on one. After that, a definite lineart is created.

After importing the lineart into Inkscape, the basic bulk of the dragon shape is created.
