How To Draw A Fish

  • Level: Beginner
  • Subject: Fish

This would be a beginner level tutorial on drawing a fish. You can walk along the tutorial either using a pen, pencils, eraser and paper, or you could use any graphics software that has layer handling feature like GIMP or Adobe Photoshop along with a graphics tablet like Wacom products.

I create this using GIMP. At the end of the tutorial, you will find the XCF and PSD downloads that shows the progression in different layers.

Rough

You need to not draw the above – but basically, as I have explained in the You Too Can Sketch book, simplify the subject to simple shapes. Here it reduces to three triangles. With the above shapes in mind, do some rough markings. If you are doing it on paper, do the following marking very lightly (ignore the colored shapes).

If you are doing it on the computer, start of with a layer named ‘Rough’ and you need not worry about the darkness of the lines. You will be able to switch the layer visibility or even reduce its opacity to any percentage.

Illustrating Spider - Spider Outline

  • Software: Inkscape
  • Level: Beginner
  • Subject: Spider silhouette

Here is a video tutorial – it should be pretty self explanatory. I have tried to use the menu commands as far as possible, even though I use the keyboard shortcuts usually to increase my workflow speed.

This would be another character for The Assassin Order – a personal project of mine. Check out the other two characters – Anwun and Kitar.

Concept

Assassin - Gogor - Part 1 - Concept study

There are times when The Assassin Order is faced with necessity of brute force for some quest it has taken. Those are the times when the skills of Gogor – the Giant Assassin – is called upon. His opponents repent when they think he is a simpleton – his war-hammer technique leaves no room for other thought than escape.

Assassin - Gogor - Part 1 - Hand Study

After a couple of thumbnail sketches, I study the different anatomical features until I am comfortable with it. Note that since he is a giant, I try to keep his anatomy around 9 to 10 heads tall.

Lineart

Once I am comfortable and decide on the pose, I work on the basics and get the pose anatomically correct.
