Contrast In Details

Last time, we had a brief look at how the color contrast plays a role in composition. This time around, we will have a look at the role of details and contrast in details in any artwork.

For this study, I did not want to bring colors into play, and wanted to experiment with just the details and overall texture. Thus, the example materials will be just line art.

Here is an abstract artwork with nature as a theme.

Detail Contrast - Flowers And Leaves

Notice how the intricate details are only in the bottom left corner.

Detail Contrast - Flowers And Leaves - Zones Of Details

In terms of the overall texture of the image, only a small part has a lot of details. And a lot of the area is kept blank. There is a stark contrast in the amount of details. The areas marked with red and orange have heavy details, and the area marked out by green has almost no details.  This creates a balance to the composition of the artwork. The eye of hte viewer is pulled into the flowers and leaves, and the thin extending twig just has a lingering feeling.

This sort of composing the artwork in terms of detail may seem a bit hard to achieve for everything. But once you think a little about placing the details, you will not find it that hard.

Consider a scene of a city by the sea.

Some of us have learned the color wheel and the color complements in our elementary schooling. There is the color wheel too, that goes a long way.

Hidden among this colors is a tool or a technique – the use of color contrasts – to make good compositions for artworks, and there by making good artworks.

Being a reader of All Strage Hours, I read about Color and Color Mixing by David.

Color Contrasting Painting Of Landscape

He talks about the Munsell Complements. They are a little different from what we derive from the color wheel:

  • Yellow – Purple Blue
  • Yellow Red — Blue
  • Green — Red Purple
  • Blue Green — Red
  • Blue — Yellow Red

These are visual complements. These complements are based on how the human eye perceives the color.

This is continuation of the walk-through of illustrating a vector art of Chinese Dragon. Check out Part 1 if you have not done so already.

Shaping Scales

Using the imported image as a guide, start creating shapes for the scales.

Chinese Dragon - Illustrating - Tip - Translucent Imported Lineart

An easy trick that you can use while drawing lot of complex details, is to have the imported line art at the top, but with reduced opacity. Make it about 30% to 50% transparent.

Giving a gradient for the scales, can be a bit time consuming, but gives a pleasant effect.

This is less of a tutorial and more of a walk-through of creating a vector illustration of a Chinese dragon. I will be applying several techniques, which are posted earlier.

Concept and Lineart

Chinese Dragon - Concept

As with most of the artworks, I start roughing out different ideas, and then settle on one. After that, a definite lineart is created.

Vector Shapes

After importing the lineart into Inkscape, the basic bulk of the dragon shape is created.
